Fruitful day with a BIG(!) group of kids & an unintentional shock
Saturday, Dec. 04, 2004 - 12:49 a.m.
Dear Confidant,
My legs are aching and I felt like sleeping. However, I am here to update the special day that just passed while it is still fresh in my mind. =)
I deferred my polytechnic final year (2 semesters) until May 2005. Now I am working as a teacher in Bethesda Community Service Society (BCSS) Before After School Care (BAC) Centre. Today is outing day for my kids in the centre. In fact, every friday in this year end holiday is outing day. Today is a visit to Mac Donald's kitchen and library.
Boy, the kids are VERY excited! Some of them with irregular attendance came today. That surprise me! Haha! The power of Mac Donalds!
The super mini tour into Mac Donalds kitchen (Tampines Mall) was an interesting eye opener to me. I saw special equipments that were used to toast/fry/store/chill/clean their by-product before it was present to us at the counter. And we got to eat a meal (worth $5) for only $2! That was a great savings!
We then proceed on the fourth level open area. It was play time! There was a very interesting playground there that I myself enjoy playing! I play like one of the kids. Haha! Call me childish if you like, I would rather say that I am humbling down to the kids level to relate to them.
When we gather to proceed to the library, we realised there was a performance on the outdoor stage. It catered for children so we ask ours to watch it while resting after the free play at the playground. I think they really need the break. In fact, 3 students throw up after the meal or the free play. The reason was not known but we suspected that they played too wildly. However, most of them thought that the performance was boring as it appealed more to children between 2 to 6 years old. The moral of the performance is patience which those who hate to watch the show have to put into practice immediately. Haha! Someone wrote that in the journal at the end of the day. It was funny of him to write that.
We then walk to the library and enjoy about 1 hour of time soaking within oceans of books! I come to learn that children are very careless. Once another thing catches their attention, they will leave their thing behind and in the end, misplace it. This happened to one primary 4 girl.
After we went back to the centre, they had noodles for tea break before writing their journals. It was a joy to read their entries. They wrote funny things which they didn’t think is funny. They wrote mean things which they really mean it. Almost everyone enjoyed the outing and learnt to be patient.
It was a tiring day for my legs but guess what? My day had not ended. I went to meet my cell group and later my cell group before multiplication to celebrate my dear sista Evan’s birthday! It was fun to gather together as a combined cell again. We had fun celebrating.
Guess what happened? I did something that shocked many. But it was not my intention. I wanted a second helping of the cake due to my hunger (I had only 2 pieces of bread for dinner). Jeremy and Jackie (the cell leaders of the 2 cells) stopped me! “Shu Ling, cannot eat leow!”, both agreed in unison. I was upset though I know they meant well as I really need to lose some weight. So I protested and they said okay. A few seconds later, I dumped my first helping of cake next to the last piece of cake (suppose to be my second helping). Everyone was shocked! They thought I was angry and making a big fuss.
Haha! How WRONG were they! I threw the cake due to my immediate and desperate need to free my hands to get tissues. Some cake dropped unto my jeans! However, I was a little clumsy and the cake went upside down. This made me look as if I didn’t want the cake. I explain myself but it really shocked Evan, the birthday girl. Later, I even throw the plastic cake knife and said, “Enough hor!” in an unfriendly manner when she tensed me continuously. She was shocked again! I told her I was joking. I really hoped she doesn’t mind. =) I meant no harm.
I did not even realised how my action shocked everyone until someone feedbacked that to me after I reached home. I messaged everyone to explain and apologise.
This ended my day! Thank God for the fun! May the Heavenly Father bless me with refreshing night rest. I need to work from 7am tomorrow. *yawns*
