Thoughts on my first lesson of the course

Dearie Diary,

As mentioned in the previous entry, I'm embarking on a new course on Valentine's Day. It is indeed a course that delivers what it promises (well, a feeling) and a course that is very interesting...

The purpose of the first lesson of course has ice breaker(s) or is a get-to-know section. The first chapter or objective began after the "MINGLING" session.

Our objective is to experience ourselves what is it like to be a learner of a NEW language. NEW as in a language you never heard before. How was this objective met?

A lady from Wales came and be our teacher of their language - Welsh (pardon me for not knowing how to spell their language). We are to learn the stage & procedures of her teaching process and the feelings we had during the Welsh lesson but we did not know in advance.

Initially it is exciting for me to learn a new foreign language, even if it means a few phrases. It is because I love to learn new things (teachable heart). As the lesson goes on, it get tougher as word are combined into sentences or questions. I got uncomfortable feelings. Yecks! Stress? Bored? I don't know... But at that moment I was looking for an alternative to the WHITE FLAG..

I can't believe that my teachable heart turn into a discouraged heart so fast.. Well, in reality it do happens. But never had I expect it to happen in a classroom setting!

When the lady from Wales taught us enough sentences and questions, she left us with our instructor. We then talk about our feelings and pointers to conduct a lesson. I am thankful that I wasn't the only one who felt that negative feelings.

We were also told that there are 2 stages in a lesson plan. That surprise many of us as we guess a larger number than that.. But the instructor pointed out that we mistook stages as procedures. And instantly we are enlightened.

Finally our homework for the lesson. 1 is to do a pre-course task and 2 is to make am attempt to do a lesson plan of the Welsh lesson we had. Another homework is an on-going one. A diary (like this) to reflect and record the thoughts after every lessons. Indeed, I look forward to the second session.

Yesterday (16/02/2003), I got Management test. I pray that I can get a DISTINCTION! I was quite confident. After my test, I went for my CCA - SP-BP Mentoring Club. (I'll talk about me Co-Curriculum Activities CCA later in my diary). It is an exciting part of my life in SP. Do check it out soon...
